LOS ANGELES – Hotel worker volunteers will announce Thursday a major effort on behalf of private and public sector unions to urge 170,000 registered Latino voters to support Wendy Greuel for mayor of Los Angeles. Latino leaders will lay out an extensive plan to recruit volunteers, knock on doors and organize community events in the ramp up to the May 21 mayor's race.Along with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, more than two dozen private and public sector unions have endorsed Greuel in her bid to head America's second largest city. They include UNITE HERE Local 11, the union representing 20,000 hotel and food service workers in Southern California, Teamsters Local 911, Teamsters Local 399, SEIU United Long Term Care Workers' Union and more.
"Wendy is a tough, working woman just like me," said Victoria Vergara, a long-time Bonaventure Hotel housekeeper, who was featured in a 2009 LA Times column about her political activism. "Not only am I going to walk neighborhoods in East LA for Wendy, I am going to convince all my co-workers at the Bonaventure to volunteer for her too."
